🌿 The Basics of Cannabis Weights
Cannabis is typically sold by weight, using the imperial system (grams and ounces). Here’s how it breaks down:
Measurement | Grams | Typical Use | Street Name |
|---|---|---|---|
1 gram | 1 g | 1–2 joints or 1 bowl | “A gram” |
⅛ ounce | 3.5 g | 3–7 joints | “An eighth” |
¼ ounce | 7 g | 10–14 joints | “A quarter” |
½ ounce | 14 g | 25–30 joints | “A half” |
1 ounce | 28 g | 50+ joints | “A zip” or “an O” |
💡Note: In Massachusetts, the legal purchase limit for flower is 1 ounce per day.
🌿 Flower – The Simplest Form of Weed
Cannabis pricing is tiered: the more you buy, the lower the price per gram tends to be.
- 1g of flower (or buds): $5-$20
- 1/8 oz (3.5 grams): $15-50
- 1/4 oz (7 grams): $25-80
- 1/2 oz (14 grams): $50-$140
- 1 oz (28 grams): $80-$250
This is similar to buying in bulk, just like going to Costco: if you love a particular strain, getting a larger size can stretch your dollars further and you can buy more cannabis (weed) per dollar. Using the table above and the estimated pricing, you are now prepared for when a someone asks you, how many grams in a half ounce, or how many eighths are in an ounce of weed.
Aside from customers that may purchase bulk sizes of cannabis to use and share with others in a pipe or roll it in a cone, many people buy an ounce for weed edibles that they may make at home. Buying one strain in a bulk size, allows you to have consistency in your homemade baked goods.
Since Massachusetts regulations restrict recreational cannabis customers to 1 ounce of cannabis per visit per day, there isn’t a larger weight that is available for sale at dispensaries. The Cannabis Control Commission is considering an increase in this limit to two ounces of weed. Here is an article about the recent Senate vote that passed 16-0 to reform the CCC, and provie inroads to increasing limits o nlicenses, adjusting the medical cannabiis regulations, and opening the door for people to posses up to two ounces of weed. https://malegislature.gov/PressRoom/Detail?pressReleaseId=296

📦 Storage of Your Flower is Very Important
Proper storage preserves potency and freshness. Follow these tips:
- Use Airtight Containers: This will prevent the cannabis from drying out, and avoid moisture and mold issues.
- Keep in a Cool, Dark Area: Light and heat negatively effect the cannabinoids.
- Avoid Plastic: Plastics tend to allow for static, leading to the loss of the trichomes on the buds (This is where a lot of the THC is stores)
